The coach of a Bay Area soccer club's women's team is facing four misdemeanor charges for allegedly furnishing alcohol to players under the age of 21, San Jose Police Department records show.
Jeff van Gastel, 33, of San Jose, held an annual end-of-the-season barbecue June 7 at his parents' San Jose house where players reportedly participated in drinking games, strip poker, streaking naked through the streets and group sex with their coach, court documents reveal.
The team Gastel coached, the De Anza Force 86, is for players born after July 31, 1986, according to the De Anza Force Soccer Club's Web site.
Two of three women with whom Gastel admitted having sex later filed police reports alleging sexual assault, but police have concluded the women were all conscious and willing participants in the party's activities.
The two women who filed the sexual assault reports told police they never said no to Gastel's advances and took off their clothes willingly, according to the police report.
Gastel admitted that he provided some of his players with beer and margaritas before he and three women showered together and engaged in group sex in a back room, but he vehemently denied all allegations of assault, according to the court documents.
The third woman involved also denied the claims.
The police report concludes that there is "no evidence to suggest that force, threats or drugs were involved. The victims and witnesses were conscious and were willing participants.''
Gastel was the president and founder of the De Anza Force Soccer Club, which is based out of Cupertino. The club's Web site today announced Gastel's resignation from all duties with the club.
Gastel is currently free on a $15,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Sept. 12.
